I-40: Ultrasound in Multiple Pregnancy

Authors

Abstract:

Ultrasound has revolutioned the care of women carring twins. First trimester evaluation is the best time to determine chorioniocity and amnioniocity in multiple gestations. First trimester diagnosis is based on the number of gestational sacs, amnions and yolk sacs. Growth rate in multiple multiple gestations during the fist and early second trimesters parallels the growth rate of singleton pregnancies, dropping off during the late second and third trimesters. Most cases of growth discrepancy are diagnosed at the second half of the pregnancy and twin to twin transfusion Syndrome is the main differentional diagnosis. Ultrasound is very important for evaluating complications of twin pregnancy some Complications are more frequent in twin than singleton gestations such as preterm delivery, IUGR, preeclampsia ,PROM, Placenta previa, Abruptia placenta, post partom hemorrhage, umbilical and accidents and congenital anomalies and some are unique to twins: TTTS, twin emboliesation syndrome, Umbilical cord entanglement, Conjoined twin.

I-19: Risks of Multiple Pregnancy, Preterm

Advances in treating infertile couples by assisted reproductive technologies (ART) over more than three decades have greatly improved the chances of better outcomes. While twinning and higher order multiple birth rates are still high in most countries, lower rates have sometimes been achieved by single-embryo transfer. The role of ultrasound in multiple pregnancy.

The advances in reproductive technologies have changed the demographics of multifetal pregnancies. In the first trimester, ultrasound allows to diagnose the number of multiples, chorionicity and amnionicity, the presence or absence of nuchal translucency, early growth discordance, severe malformations and the origin of activities and contacts between multiples. In the second and third trimester...

I-40: Implantation Failure

Background: The process of implantation involves the interaction of the human embryo and the uterine epithelium. Failure of implantation is a major reason for infertility in women and the inability to achieve endometrial receptivity is responsible for much of the failure of reproductive technologies. Management of repeated implantation failure despite transfer of good-quality embryos still rema...

Ultrasound in Pregnancy

During an ultrasound scan, high frequency sound waves are produced by a transducer (the part of the machine which is placed on the body). The sound waves are passed into the body where they encounter structures (like your baby!). When this happens, the waves reflect back, and the sound (or echo) is detected electronically and transmitted onto a screen as a dot. This results in a picture being f...
